  • iOS 17.5 beta 2 is now available with app downloads from websites in EU

    Macworld Apr 16, 2024 | 13:24 pm

Macworld It’s been a month since the release of iOS 17.4, which introduced a few minor tweaks (like new emojis) for all users, but it has a massive change to app distribution for those in the European Union. In compliance with the Digital Markets Act, that version allowed alternate app stores, changed policies and terms around apps, browsers that use their own engines, and more. Typically, a new iOS version is followed almost immediately by a beta of the next point release, so the month-long absence of any iOS beta is a strange occurrence. We expect the beta to continue for at least a few weeks; the final release of iOS 17.5 might not even come until May. Update April 16: Apple has released the second beta of iOS 17.5. What’s new in iOS 17.5 We don’t know everything that we can expect in iOS 17.5 as there are no patch notes yet, but we keep this section updated with significant new features and changes as they are discovered. App downloads from websites (EU only): Another feature in compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, iOS 17.5 enables users to download apps directly from websites. In order to offer these downloads, developers need to clear significant hurdles (including being a registered developer for two years and having existing apps with more than a million downloads in the prior year). Unwanted item tracking: According to 9to5Mac, the 17.5 beta includes references to a new anti-stalking feature that works wit third-party trackers as well as AirTags. The new language in the Find My app reads: “This item isn’t certified on the Apple Find My network. You can disable this item and stop it from sharing its location with the owner.” New Apple Pencil and squeeze gesture (iPadOS only): MacRumors has found code within the iPadOS 17.5 beta that references a new “V4” Apple Pencil and a potential new “squeeze” gesture for certain actions. A new Apple Pencil has been rumored to be on the way at the same time as a new iPad Pro and iPad Air, which may launch in May. iOS 17.5: How to install the public beta If you want to be among the first to install iOS 17.5, you can sign up for the public beta and get the release candidate now. The process for installing a beta has changed in iOS 16.4. Here’s how the new process works now: Click Sign Up on the Apple Beta page and register with your Apple ID. Log in to the Beta Software Program. Click Enroll your iOS device. Open the Settings app, tap General, then Software Update. In the Beta Updates section, select the iOS Public Beta. It may take a few moments after registering for the beta option to appear in Software Update. iOS 17.5: How to install the developer beta You’ll need to be registered as an Apple developer. Beginning with iOS 17, you don’t need to be in the $99 per year developer program to access the[…]

  • Best pencil or stylus for iPad, iPad Air, Pro and mini

    Macworld Apr 16, 2024 | 11:16 am

Best pencil or stylus for iPad, iPad Air, Pro and mini Macworld The iPad is a capable device for both art and productivity, but it becomes a stronger proposition in both areas if you have a good stylus to hand. Whether you’re sketching a new building design, taking notes during a work meeting or designing graphics, a stylus is a game-changer. But with so many to choose from in just about every shape and size, which is the best for your needs? Everyone has heard of the Apple Pencil, but there are plenty of great alternatives that cost a fraction of the price.  Here are the best iPad styluses available right now. Updated November 27 to add Adonit Note+ 2 and the Apple Pencil USB-C Apple Pencil (2nd generation) – Best overall Price When Reviewed: $129 Best Prices Today: $17.99 at Best Buy$129 at Apple$129.99 at Adorama The Apple Pencil is an obvious choice, what isn’t quite so obvious is which Apple Pencil you should choose. There are two Apple Pencils. The Apple Pencil 1st generation is still on sale despite launching in 2015 and there is an Apple Pencil 2nd generation, which launched in 2018. The first generation Apple Pencil, which features later in this round-up, works with the current 9th and 10th generation iPads as well as a number of older iPad models. The second generation Apple Pencil, works with the 12.9in iPad Pro (3rd gen up), 11in iPad Pro (1st gen up), iPad Air (4th gen up) and iPad mini (6th gen). When we reviewed the Apple Pencil 2nd gen back in 2018 we gave it 5 stars. It’s shorter than the original and Apple has given the 2nd gen Pencil a flat edge you can tap to trigger app-specific functions. This actually makes Apple’s stylus easier to hold and it stops it rolling off your desk. The 2nd gen Pencil is also magnetically attachable to the iPad, which also helps with the rolling. Another major change is that the 2018 Pencil has no Lightning connector for charging, instead, it charges wirelessly when connected to the iPad, which is much neater. The 2nd gen Pencil is matt white rather than the glossy white of the original (which could be a bit dazzling). You can also tell the two apart because the original had a metallic ring next to the charging cap. Both the 1st and 2nd generation Apple Pencils are equally responsive and pressure-sensitive. You can tilt the stylus to create different textures, making it a great tool for handwriting, sketching, note-taking and illustration. • AMD-powered Minisforum V3 Surface-style tablet is up for sale

    PCWorld Apr 16, 2024 | 09:46 am

AMD-powered Minisforum V3 Surface-style tablet is up for sale Some people have been waiting a long time for an alternative to Microsoft’s Surface series, and niche small form factor manufacturer Minisforum is ready to give it to them. The company’s V3 tablet, which proclaims itself the “world’s first AMD 3-in-1 Windows tablet,” is now available to purchase and shipping in a little over a week. Minisforum might be being a little grandiose in its description of the V3 — it’s not as if it was ever impossible to use a Ryzen platform in a Surface form factor, it’s just that no one saw a huge demand for it. But that being said, there’s no doubt that this is some pretty impressive hardware on paper. The base model of the V3 tablet uses an 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 8840U processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. Again, that’s the base configuration, with a detachable keyboard included. The screen and body are considerably larger than the Surface, with a 14-inch 2K panel and a 165Hz refresh rate. Other hardware features include three USB-C ports (two USB-4, one with Vlink DP-in to use the tablet as a portable monitor), a full-sized SD card slot, a headphone jack, and a fingerprint reader in the power button. Minisforum Minisforum Minisforum All that tech is going for $1,199 for the early bird special. Early buyers also get a free stylus, laptop sleeve, and glass screen protector. The price will go up to $1,499 after the first batch, but the equivalent build of the Surface Pro 9 is priced at over two grand. And even after more than a decade of hearing this complaint, Microsoft still wants you to pay extra for the keyboard. Even so, I’d be trepidatious about dropping more than a thousand dollars on hardware from a company that hasn’t made a portable device before. Feel free to put your money down, but I’d wait for the first batch of reviews to arrive. Tablets

Best external SSD for gaming 2024: Portable performance drives Maybe your gaming laptop doesn’t have enough storage. Or you simply want an easy way to make your game library portable. An external SSD can fix both of these issues (and more) by providing an easy way to expand storage that you can take on the go. But a winner is a winner, and in the end, the Lexar overtook our previous champ, Crucial’s X10 Pro, even if only by a hair. The upshot is that you can expect excellent performance from the Lexar SL600. It also comes in a uniquely shaped form factor, complete with an opening to accommodate a lanyard, for easy toting. Gamers might appreciate that you can even add some bling by opting for the SL660 variant, which features RGB lighting within its miniature handle. The drive comes with the standard five year warranty. When performance is this closely matched among products, the determining factor should be price. And here, too, the SL600 is neck-and-neck with the Crucial X10 Pro, and priced slightly to significantly cheaper than some of its competitors, at least as of this writing — particularly at the 2TB level. • Best cheap antivirus deals for Mac

    Macworld Apr 16, 2024 | 09:15 am

Best cheap antivirus deals for Mac Macworld Mac security software adds another layer of protection to what Apple already provides, with features that can help to protect your identity, passwords, and financial details. These are the things that criminals are after, and they’ll often use cunning ways to extract them rather than spending time trying to break past Apple’s defenses in macOS. Although some of the packages here are solely focused on macOS, others will also protect Android and Windows devices you might also own, and that makes the price of protection much cheaper per computer. Good security software should warn you before you click on a dangerous website, or open a ‘phishing’ email with a dodgy attachment, which could trick you into handing over your bank details, passwords, or other sensitive information. • Apple’s ambitious M4 Mac roadmap will finally give every model the latest chip

    Macworld Apr 16, 2024 | 08:07 am

Macworld While Apple silicon has done great things for the Mac, Apple has yet to settle on a predictable update cycle for its Mac lineup. Along with shifting release schedules, each generation of chips has skipped a model without a clear reason why. The Mac Pro and high-end Mac mini never got the M1 chip. The iMac completely skipped the M2. And the M3 hasn’t made it to the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro. But a new report claims the M4 will finally put the entire Mac lineup on a level playing field as Apple plans to update its entire catalog with the next-gen chip. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the M4 rollout will begin later this year and continue throughout 2025. Here’s when the new models are expected to arrive: Late 2024 (M4): Entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro Late 2024 (M4): 24-inch iMac Late 2024/Early 2025 (M4 Pro/M4 Max): 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros Late 2024/Early 2025 (M4/M4 Pro): Mac mini Early 2025 (M4): 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air Mid-2025 (M4 Max/M4 Ultra): Mac Studio Late 2025 (M4 Ultra): Mac Pro The schedule here indicates that Apple is looking to establish an annual update pattern for the Mac much like the iPhone and Apple Watch. A late 2024 iMac and MacBook Pro release would be 12 months after the M3 models, while the M4 MacBook Airs would also arrive about a year after the M3 models. Separating the entry-level MacBook Pro from the higher-end models would be a curious move, though Apple may want to stagger the chips and separate the M4 Pro/Max from the M4 to give the higher-end machines their own spotlight. It also makes sense to separate the Mac Studio from the Mac Pro since they are marketed toward different audiences despite having similar specs. A report last week claimed that the M4 chip will have an AI focus, which likely means some newer macOS 15 features will require a Mac with an M4 chip. Apple will unveil the newest features of macOS at WWDC in June, but some features could be held back until the new chips are unveiled later this year similar to how Apple handles iPhone releases.  Find out more about the M4 MacBook Pro in our rumor round up. • AMD brings AI to business desktops with Ryzen Pro chips

    PCWorld Apr 16, 2024 | 08:00 am

AMD brings AI to business desktops with Ryzen Pro chips AMD today launched its most recent generation of business processors for business PCs, the Ryzen Pro 8000 series, for both desktop and laptops. For now, AMD will be the only CPU vendor offering AI-powered NPUs in business desktop PCs. AMD’s launch arrives on the heels of Intel’s 14th-gen vPro platform, which also offers desktop and mobile parts. The difference is that Intel launched its vPro refresh based upon the “Raptor Lake Refresh” architecture, which lacks AI; AMD’s Ryzen Pro 8000 series is relatively consistent across both its mobile and desktop offerings. However, not every new Ryzen Pro 8000 mobile or desktop chip includes AI support. If you’ve been following our coverage of AMD’s Ryzen 8000 mobile CPUs and AMD’s corresponding Ryzen 8000 desktop processors, AMD’s latest chip lineups shouldn’t be surprising. AMD’s latest Ryzen Pro 8000 processors pretty much overlap its consumer offerings, with the Ryzen 9 Pro 8945HS (8 cores, 16 threads, boosting from 4.0GHz to 5.2GHz) on down. AMD’s Ryzen Pro 8000 desktop processors are similar, with the Ryzen 8700G (8 cores, 16 threads, boosting from 4.2GHz to 5.1GHz) at the top of the stack. All of the new processors are 4nm parts, based on AMD’s Zen 4 architecture. What’s new? Some of AMD’s Ryzen Pro 8000 desktop chips now offer Ryzen AI, a competitive advantage that AMD is pushing hard. (AMD’s existing Ryzen 8000 desktop lineup supports Ryzen AI.) The Ryzen Pro lineup now also offers “E” versions, which reduce the available power envelope from between 45- and 65W to a flat 35W cTDP. AMD is also touting its advantages in AI and power in the mobile space. AMD’s desktop chips now include the Pluton security coprocessor, too, the first time that AMD has added it to a desktop part; cloud-based remote manageability features are also present. The HP Elitebook 835 and 845 G11 and the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen5 and P14s, are some of the devices that will use the new Ryzen processors. “Together all these processors we announced today really push the boundaries of performance and efficiency from AMD like we’ve never done before,” said Ronak Shah, global commercial product marketing manager at AMD, in a briefing with reporters. AMD’s Ryzen Pro 8000 mobile processors AMD refers to its mobile Ryzen 8000 processors as the Ryzen Pro 8040 series of mobile processors, though its desktop chips are called the AMD Ryzen Pro 8000 lineup. Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Millions of AI PCs have already shipped, based upon their combination of CPU, GPU, and (sometimes) NPU, which can collaborate on AI-specific tasks if coded appropriately. By 2026, six out of 10 PCs should qualify as AI PCs, Shah said, though there’s still no formal definition of the term. The argument is that corporations and their sensitive business data could have more of a demand for local on-PC AI than consumers, especially if Microsoft eventually decides to run Copilot on local PCs. “There’s no model for running the Copilot infrastructure on-premises or with any[…]

  • Apple loses No. 1 spot in smartphone market after steep sales dip

    Macworld Apr 16, 2024 | 07:38 am

Macworld Following a brief sojourn at the top of the table, Apple has dropped down to the number-two spot (by units shipped) in the global smartphone market. According to IDC’s figures for the first quarter of 2024, Samsung has moved back to the top position with 60.1 million shipments, a market share of 20.8 percent. Apple is in second place with 50.1 million (17.3 percent) while the Chinese firm Xiaomi sits in third place with 40.8 million units and a share of 14.1 percent. Samsung outperformed Apple across 2023 as a whole, but the Cupertino company did top the table at the end of the year. Apple traditionally performs especially well in the fall/early winter period following its annual iPhone refresh in September. Nevertheless, Apple’s drop back to second spot isn’t just about the expected difference between its seasonally hot Q4 and slow Q1. The company’s year-on-year comparison was markedly worse than that of Samsung, and indeed of all the other companies in the top 5. While Apple’s Q1 2024 was 9.6 percent down on Q1 2023, Oppo was down by 8.5 percent and Samsung by just 0.7 percent. Third-place Xiaomi and fourth-place Transsion (which has a strong foothold in Africa) were both up year on year, by 33.8 percent and 84.9 percent respectively. “While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter,” commented IDC group vice president Ryan Reith. “While IDC expects these two companies to maintain their hold on the high end of the market, the resurgence of Huawei in China, as well as notable gains from Xiaomi, Transsion, Oppo/OnePlus, and vivo will likely have both OEMs looking for areas to expand and diversify.” It’s worth emphasising, however, that (while second place isn’t bad by any means) Apple would do considerably better if the terms of the analysis were tweaked. For one thing, measuring by unit shipments punishes Apple (and, to a lesser extent, Samsung) for selling premium, high-margin phones rather than focusing on volume. If the table was organized by revenue or, better still, profit, a lot of Apple’s rivals would fall by the wayside. Secondly, while Apple has strong rivals on the global stage, the company’s dominance in its home market is profound. If you asked a random group of U.S. teenagers which brand of phone they intend to buy next time, the proportion naming Apple would be startling. Still, aside from inter-brand squabbles, IDC’s figures appear to paint a rosy picture of the industry as a whole, with overall shipments up 7.8% on the same period last year. “The smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years both stronger and changed,” said IDC research director Nabila Popal. iPhone

  • Use your TV as a computer monitor: Everything you need to know

    PCWorld Apr 16, 2024 | 07:00 am

Use your TV as a computer monitor: Everything you need to know You’re not the first person who’s wondered what it would be like to have a giant desktop monitor. Think of all the multi-tasking and immersive gaming you could manage if you had a 50- or 60-inch monitor instead of a standard 24-inch monitor! But you’ve probably noticed that as monitors get bigger, they also tend to get prohibitively expensive. Can you use a TV as a monitor? You’ve probably already got a big screen in your house, though—a TV. At the end of the day, isn’t an HDTV just a giant, living-room-oriented computer monitor? Not exactly. While you can use a TV as a computer monitor in most cases, that doesn’t mean it’s the best option. In fact, it’s likely less attractive, convenient, and usable than you think (not to mention, probably not that cheap). There’s a reason dirt-cheap 32-inch HDTVs aren’t flying off the shelves to be used as budget-friendly jumbo screens. You definitely can use an HDTV as your PC’s display, though, and your television can also work in a pinch if you suddenly need a second screen. Here’s everything you need to know about how to set up a TV as a computer monitor—and why you might not want to. How to use a TV as a monitor You can use a TV as a monitor, but it could take a little finagling. You may need a special cable, depending on your PC’s outputs and your HDTV’s inputs, and you’ll need to check a couple of settings, but you shouldn’t have too much trouble hooking most modern PCs up to most modern HDTVs.  Modern HDTVs have HDMI outputs. Some older HDTVs have DVI inputs, and some even have VGA inputs specifically designated for “PC use.” If your graphics card has an HDMI output, you’re good to go: Just use an HDMI cable to connect your PC to your HDMI. All modern graphics cards (like this Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 6600 XT) include at least one HDMI port (second from left, between several DisplayPorts). Brad Chacos/IDG Brad Chacos/IDG If you’re using an older graphics card or motherboard that only has a DVI output, you can snag a cheap DVI-to-HDMI cable and plug it into your HDTV’s HDMI output. Amazon sells a six ft. AmazonBasics version for just $9. Although some older HDTVs and some older computers only have VGA inputs/outputs, they aren’t not an ideal choice. VGA’s an analog signal that will give you a far fuzzier, lower-resolution image than you’ll get with an HDMI or DVI cord. If you want to use your HDTV as a second or third monitor, you may need to use a different port, such as your graphics card’s DisplayPort output. In this[…]

This update has nearly the same array of ports, but almost all of them have some additional oomph: greater speed, power, or display resolution. The dock’s basics are four USB-C data ports, gigabit ethernet, 85W of passthrough energy on a dedicated USB-C power port, HDMI, and an SD Card slot. Sounds good, but dig into the details, and it’s even better. This version 3 dock from Satechi provides significant updates, sporting three 10Gbps USB 3.2 ports (two shown, one on the opposite side). That’s handy when you need to make fast connections to SSDs or computer-to-computer connections and need ports beyond what’s built into your Mac. This is a step up from three USB-C data ports on the V2 unit, all of which were 5Gbps. Using HDMI, you can connect an 8K display at up to 30Hz; several Mac models allow this resolution and refresh rate (or faster). You can also connect a 4K display at up to 120Hz. (Your Mac has to support these resolutions and refresh rates as the dock isn’t a video card, just a passthrough.) The V2 version of the dock maxed out at 4K/60Hz, so this is a significant update for those using more advanced displays. To make room for an extra USB-C port, something had to give, and Satechi shed the dedicated Micro SD slot while retaining a UHS-II full-sized SD Card port. You’ll need an adapter to use Micro SD on the mini-dock, but if you’re like me, you have a few card-sized adapters scattered around from your Micro SD purchases. The gigabit ethernet port tests handily at 1Gbps, less a small amount of network overhead. Available in three colors (silver, space gray, and midnight) the mini-dock is compact at 4.5 by 2.1 by 0.65 inches and 4.25 ounces. It has[…]

  • Apple can learn a valuable lesson from the Humane AI pin disaster

    Macworld Apr 16, 2024 | 05:30 am

Apple can learn a valuable lesson from the Humane AI pin disaster Macworld Son, your mother and I want to talk to you about AI. No, don’t get up. Look, we don’t want you to learn about it on the streets. Because it’s an ugly business. The Macalope probably doesn’t have to detail the many problems with AI. First of all, it’s a misnomer. Calling today’s large language models “artificial intelligence” is like calling the first combustion engine a warp drive. Second, much like a coal furnace, all these various constructs have to be fed a corpus of content to be able to generate anything at all. Where does all this come from? Uh, blurgle frangle blooble hammer, we, uh, just found it lying around! No, actually, you didn’t, you used a whole bunch of other people’s work and you didn’t pay a damn thing for it. Then, of course, the results you’ll get from your model will vary based on the inputs. If it’s info is based on 4chan comments, I wouldn’t go asking it for any medical advice. Part of this is why the results are spotty or often just really bad and verging into dangerous. Other than these problems, though, it’s great and this is why Apple needs to have AI right now! Look, if even Jony Ive is jumping off a well-chamfered bridge, don’t you want too as well, Apple? “Jony Ive AI device could get $1B funding from Laurene Powell Jobs” And what is this device, exactly? Well, we don’t know and, while it’s possible that Ive and collaborator Sam Altman have a rock-solid idea of what it should be, we have a very real example of people being given a mess of money before they really knew what they were doing and also shipping before they knew what they were doing. That is the Humane AI pin. And how did that work out? Well, Marques Brownlee called it “the worst product I’ve ever reviewed” is how that worked out, thank you for asking. (And he’s not the only one.) The Macalope would like to talk to a market purist about this because this is not an efficient distribution of capital. It is rich people who know each other throwing big piles of money at one another and hoping something comes of it. It doesn’t have to be this way. The Macalope’s been hard on Humane mostly because his instincts are activated by the smell of flop sweat. He doesn’t know anything about the funding behind the Limitless pendant, but it doesn’t have that. The horny one doesn’t know if it’ll be successful, but it is at least a thing that knows what it wants to be: a device that helps you keep track of things. That’s not to say that it doesn’t come without its own concerns–privacy and consent being at the top of the list–but Limitless addresses those issues head-on. It remains to be seen if their technology works like advertised or offers the protections they claim, but it’s nice to hear someone talking about[…]

  • More Windows PCs are now getting the free upgrade to Windows 11

    PCWorld Apr 16, 2024 | 05:30 am

More Windows PCs are now getting the free upgrade to Windows 11 If you have a Windows 10 computer, Microsoft will offer you a free upgrade to Windows 11. Provided the hardware of the Windows 10 computer is compatible, otherwise Windows 11 will refuse the installation. Microsoft has now released a large number of Windows 10 PCs that were previously not allowed to install the upgrade for the Windows 11 upgrade. Microsoft had been denying Windows 10 computers with an 11th-generation Intel Core Processor and Intel SST driver version 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152 (the SST stands for “Smart Sound Technology”) the upgrade to Windows 11 since November 2021. With this hardware driver combination, recurring blue screens of death could occur after installing Windows 11. Get windows 11 Windows 11 Pro Price When Reviewed: 199.99 Best Prices Today: $59 at PCWorld Store – Win 11 Pro Upgrade Only | $79.99 at PCWorld Software Store Resourceful Windows users could only solve this problem by updating the Intel SST drivers themselves. Those who did this independently were then able to switch to Windows 11 free of charge. However, Microsoft refused to upgrade all other PC owners with the described combination of CPU and driver. As of today, however, this problem has generally been solved. From now on, all affected Windows 10 users with the chip and driver combination described above can download and install the latest Intel SST drivers via the Windows update function. As soon as Windows 10 has installed the driver update, you can upgrade to Windows 11. However, Microsoft emphasizes that it could take another two days before Windows 10 offers the upgrade to Windows 11. You can find the official release of the Windows 10 PCs previously blocked for the upgrade on this status page from Microsoft. It is not known why Microsoft took until April 12, 2024 to finally make the drivers, which have long since been adapted by Intel, available via Windows Update and lift the upgrade block. However, if Windows 10 does not offer the driver update after all, PC owners should contact their PC manufacturer for the driver update. Windows 10 is clearly in the lead It remains to be seen whether this will significantly increase the market share of Windows 11. According to Statcounter, Windows 10 is still by far the most popular desktop operating system (March 2024: 69.05 percent market share among all Windows systems). Windows 10 even managed to gain market share slightly in March 2024, whereas Windows 11 lost market share slightly (March 2024: 26.68 percent market share among all Windows systems). According to Statcounter, all Windows systems together had a market share of 72.47 percent in March 2024. MacOS is well behind with 14.68 percent. • How to digitize VHS tapes the cheap way

    PCWorld Apr 16, 2024 | 05:00 am

How to digitize VHS tapes the cheap way Good news, everyone: My bar mitzvah videos from the mid-1990s are now digitized for the ages. While I have no intention of actually watching them — oy, the embarrassment — I recently received the original tapes from my parents and felt like they were worth preserving in a more enduring form than VHS. I was able to do it for cheap thanks to my USB capture card, which I originally bought to take screenshots of streaming devices for my TechHive column on cord cutting but which continues to have all kinds of other neat uses. Below, I’ll walk through how to digitize your own VHS tapes or camcorder footage using the same methods, plus a few extra tricks that might make a USB capture card worth considering. This column first appeared in Advisorator, Jared’s weekly tech advice newsletter. Sign up to get free tech tips every Tuesday. The hardware The USB capture card is a thumb-sized device with an HDMI input on one side and a USB plug on the other. Connect the capture card to your computer’s USB port, then hook up any device with HDMI output, and you can record that device’s video using a free program called OBS (more on that shortly). Jared Newman / Foundry Jared Newman / Foundry Jared Newman / Foundry Amazon is filled with capture cards from no-name brands for under $20. While the particular one I purchased is no longer available, this one looks pretty similar, able to capture video at 1080p up to 30 frames per second, or 720p at 60 frames per second. It uses a USB-C connector, but also has a USB-A adapter. (Alternatively, this one works the other way around.) You’ll also need a VHS player. If you don’t have one collecting dust in a closet — or don’t know anyone else who does — consider looking for one at a thrift store such as Goodwill, searching on Facebook Marketplace, or buying on eBay. Of course, most VHS players don’t have HDMI output — including the one I pilfered from my father-in-law’s house for this project — so you also need a composite-to-HDMI adapter. I grabbed one on Amazon for $10. The setup, in the end, looks like this: VHS Player → Composite video out → Composite adapter → HDMI out → USB Capture Card → PC. I’m using a Windows desktop, but this setup should work just as well with a Mac or Linux machine, or a Chromebook capable of running Linux apps. The software Jared Newman / Foundry Jared Newman / Foundry Jared Newman / Foundry The other half of the equation is a free program called Open Broadcaster Software Studio, or OBS. It’s often used to stream video game console footage on sites like Twitch and YouTube, but you can also use it to record from pretty much any HDMI video source. Once you’ve installed OBS and hooked up the USB capture card, you can record video with a handful of steps: Under “Sources,” hit[…]
